Welcome to my profile:
My name is Verona del Carmen Barrella, and I'm the artisan behind all these whimsical hand-sculpted characters.
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been working with my hands. I was forever dreaming about making "something".
I love little dolls, little things, and have been making and collecting them since I can remember. I always felt so drawn to miniatures. I’ve been sculpting for many years, from miniature foods and flowers, to little whimsical characters and doll figures.
I used to make my own air-dry clay, using glue, potato starch and a few other ingredients. This homemade dough is an air-dry clay that doesn’t need to be cured in an oven in order to harden. Once the clay dries it has the appearance of porcelain.
When I discovered polymer clay, that was it, and ever since, it has become my favorite medium for sculpting.
About the One of a kind Art Doll Concept: The possibilities to create different characters are endless. There is no right or wrong way of making dolls. A doll can look human or not, just anything your imagination can create. Anything you imagine can become a reality through your fingers. There are no parameters or limitations…just you, your imagination, and the beautiful power that lies within you to create. I delight in letting my imagination guide me, as I transform a lump of clay into something beautiful that will touch a soul in some way.
This beautiful art of one-of-a-kind doll-making encompasses hours, and in most cases, days of patient concentration and meticulous work, with great attention to detail, in order to sculpt a more realistic figure. Everything regarding each doll is carefully taken into consideration, from the best quality of clays, mixing them until the best skin color is achieved: the wire that will serve as armature, oil paints, fabrics, natural hairs… up to the right temperature and curing times. Great attention is paid to the anatomy of these dolls, their face features and, specially, their expression of emotion.
“Everything begins with a lump of clay, and ends up in an original one-of-a-kind creation, never to be repeated”.
“I want to sculpt characters that will create stories, that will withstand time; little pieces of art that one day will become precious heirlooms your family will admire for generations to come”.
Creating for Sanity:
I feel a burning desire and a great passion for what I do; I’m constantly driven to create. I don’t have days off, nor do I want any; it seems that there is no escape! because I don’t want to stop, not even for a day. I’m an artisan who is passionately driven to create, my mind designs what my hands will then create. I want to create, I have to create, it makes my heart sing, I’m in love with what I do. I am passionate about creating art that nourishes the soul, and I hope that my art is an extension of that.
Thanks so much for stopping by,
Verona,
